my spanish vacation: the lost rolls
So I know it has been quite some time since my last post, my apologies to keep you all in suspense
I have been emerged in a massive scanning bender the likes of which no scanner has ever seen. Thusly, as I spoke with my mother across the pond this past sunday to wish her a joyous Mother’s Day, it occurred to me she is in Spain, enjoying the warm balmy weather, beaches and sampling many culinary delights…no doubt where I wish to be. So I present to you a random collection of memoirs from last year’s journey.

Lovely!
Hello, beautiful photos, indeed! Tonight I just came across your photoblog and it immediately went in my bookmark bar
I read in this post that you mentioned the fact that you scan yourself your photos. May I ask you which scanner do you use? I mainly shoot digital, but I am recently going back to analog color film, mostly because of the new Portra. I have a Canon 8800f but it’s not that good and I’m thinking about of getting a better one. I have seen all of your shoots in this blog and they look great, so I thought of asking you an advice.
Thank you and sorry for my bad english (it’s not my mother language

Hello Nicola,
Thank you for your kind words and comments. First, I must apologize for the delayed response, I have been up to my eyes in other work and other things but I shall return posting very soon.
I’ll do my best to address your questions. Yes, I do scan all of my photos. I use an Epson V750 scanner. I find the results quite good, I have printed 16×20 with scanned 6×7 negatives. I usually scan at 4000 dpi then down res the images to specific sizes, which helps make them a bit sharper with less noise. Colors are handled pretty well, I use it with Silverfast 8 software which is very easy and straightforward to use. Because it is a flatbed, it has adapters that can scan 35, medium and large format film. I find the film holders, especially the 35mm and medium format ones to be a bit flimsy, the 4×5 holder is much sturdier. For 35mm film scanning, I have a dedicated Nikon, a Coolscan V ED that I bought used. The results from it are quite excellent, especially with black and white 35mm film. Portra is a great film and it scans very well! I use it almost exclusively in my work, its phenomenal for skin tones but works equally well for landscapes because of the great dynamic range it has. I don’t have any experience with the Canon, but for me the Epson works quite well for the price, its great if you want to scan for web or do decent printing up to 11×14 or 16×20.
Hopefully this was of some help! Feel free to ask me any other questions or concerns you may have.
regards,
justin
Hello Justin,
I’ll be waiting for your new posts!
big thanks for your answer. In these days I did some research about scanners and the v750 was one of my candidates. Your opinion was very helpful to clear the last doubts. Now I will start to save my money
kind regards,
Nicola
